I love goats and I love goat costumes. Costumes should be individualistic, just as goats are.

If you dress like the flavor of the month, perhaps Lady Gaga or Batman or a character from the latest hit movie, you just may not be unique.

In fact you may run into someone with the exact same costume.

With this Goat Costume, it is far less likely. It's  not going to happen.

It is actually a Pan Costume, the mythical half man half goat god of "shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music, as well as the companion of the nymphs" (ref: Wikipedia).

So why a goat costume? Why are goats so prominent in Greek and other mythologies? Why are goats considered cool in so many cultures?

Although goats are not common in the USA, they are very common animals in most countries. Compared to, for example, sheep, goats can take care of themselves.

They are extremely intelligent creatures, each with their own personality.

Goats are one of the oldest domesticated species. They have lived with humans for as long as any other animals have, 10,000 years. They are used worldwide for their milk (I love goat cheese), hair, skins, mean, and yes, companionship. Goats have become popular as pets recently, and the concept of "pet" is fairly recent in human history and also not understood by many cultures.

Pet goats have been compared to dogs, except that goats are arguably more intelligent, and they are extremely curious creatures, much like humans.

Goats go "feral," meaning return to the wild very quickly and easily. The only other creature that does so as quickly is the cat.

In Greek mythology, Amalthea, Zeus' foster mother, is often represented as a goat. Aries,  the first sign of the Zodiac, is a ram, the word actually meaning ram. Capricornus, or Capricorn, the 10th sign of the Zodiac, means "horned male goat" in Latin. Faun is a forest god of Roman Mythology, and is half goat, half human. Heiðrún is a goat from Norse mythology. Satyrs are a bunch of male human-goat like companions of Pan and Dionysius In Egyptian Mythology, Khnum had the head of a goat and the body of a human

And of course Thor, everyone's most popular Thunder God, had his magical goats named Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr.

Let's not forget The Three Billy Goats Gruff from what we might consider out current mythology! And there is a popular stuffed goat, the Webkinz mountain goat.

And in any case, this Pan Costume simply rocks and gets lots of attention!

Goats are also quite popular as team mascots . . . no surprise!
